I think that many who passed the last number of Ancharted, arose the question: whether the libertal was actually and, if it was, what was it that it was?

In the past parts of Nate, he threw mainly into mythical locations, like Eldorado, the Himalayan Shambhala or the lost city (Atlantis Peskov), which is supposedly located in the Arabian desert of the rub-al-Khali.

In the fourth part, the authors decided to rely on realism (well, this is very conditional realism), so here you have no yeti and genies, only mercenaries and heartless gravity. And although technically Libertal also belongs to the category of mythical countries, it is much more like a place that could really exist. However, there are a number of serious questions about how this republic is described in Ancharted 4. Where is it true here, no one will say, but I promise you interesting stories.

What is libertal?

Libertalia is a pirate republic, which was allegedly based on Madagascar at the end of the 17th century. Its main feature is that, judging by the description, it was an extremely democratic, and most importantly-almost a communist state, whose inhabitants had a plus or minus equal share from all income and shared everyone. Money, of course, was mined by sea robbery.

For the first time, the mention of this place is found in the book of Captain Charles Johnson, “The General History of Breeches and Deaths of Defectors, taught by the most famous pirates,” which was published in London in 1724. It is believed that Johnson is the pseudonym of the famous English writer Daniel Defoe. The book is talking about almost as a documentary work, since subsequently many facts described in the novel were confirmed by real documents from the British Ministry of Colonies, as well as letters and ship magazines of captains, which are stored in the State Archive of Britain.

In particular, the biographies of the pirates of Bartolee Roberts, Edward Tich (Black Beard), Syida Bonnet and Jack Rackham – up to the smallest details were fully confirmed. So why not be Libertaly?

Libertial in Uncharted 4: a Thief’s End

According to the plot of the fourth Ancha, Libertalia was founded by the Union of 10 influential pirate barons, at the head of which stood the famous Henry Everi – English Privatir, which is considered one of the most successful marine robbers in history. We will lower all this nonsense about Everi’s cunning tips, tests for “worthy”, traps and fantastic mechanisms that continue to work after a hundred years.

Another thing is important: Everi and the rest of the pirate barons built their utopia, but then greed prevailed. They appropriated all the gold to themselves, as a result of which the war began between the colonists and the founders in which the former clearly lost. After that, Everi and Thomas Tom poisoned the rest of the barons to divide the treasures among themselves, and then cut each other. In short, a beautiful story about evil destroying itself.

Interesting fact:

In Ancharted Drake finds one of the tips in the city of Kingsbey, which is located in Madagascar. Climbed all Yandex and Google cards, but I have never found such a city anywhere. There is an American base of the Kings Bay Navy, which is located in Georgia, but there are obviously no sense to look for the sunken English frigates.

In Reddite, they write that, most likely, this is the city of Maroanster, located in the northeast of Madagascar – in the Bay of Antungile. That’s for sure – it does not appear on the cards.

The official version

However, the history of Libertalia shown in the game has nothing to do with the book version. Let’s start in order. According to the sources that refer to the « piracy history », the founder of Libertaly was not at all Everi, but the French nobleman Olivier Misson and his friend – the Dominican priest Carrachioli.

Misson had the title of Lieutenant and was an assistant to the pilot on the French corvet « Victuar ». During a skirmish with the English pirate vessel « Winchester » near the island of Martinik on board the « Victuier », almost all officers died. Olivier persuaded the surviving crew to become pirates, raised the flag with the inscription « For God and Freedom », robbed several ships along the way and founded Libertaly on the proceeds.

By the way, the phrase « For God and Freedom » (Pro Deus Quod Licentia) was the official motto of Libertaly in Ancharted. That is, the scriptwriters took this expression, but threw everything related to Misson and Carrachioli.

Next. Misson himself, apparently, was soft and fluffy. During the robberies, he took only the necessary, spared the crews of the captured ships, freed the Negro-Wilmarks and generally behaved purely in a pantry. And most importantly, he was an idealist and, apparently, a socialist. This follows from the book « Golden era of the sea robbery » Dmitry Kopelev.

But this will not be a simple robbery, the rebel, intellectual Misson, said, we will bear the light of the ideas of equality, human brotherhood and save humanity from the power of gold. He echoed Karachioli: “We are not pirates. We, free people, fight for the right of man to live according to the laws of God and nature. We have nothing to do with the pirates, except that we are looking for happiness at sea. « .

Golden era of sea robbery

In 1694, Misson’s ship entered the deserted desert of Diego Suares, located on the northeastern tip of the island of Madagascar, where on the rocky shores of the bay and Liberttali was founded.

Kopelev writes that it was a world of equal people where there were no racial prejudices, there was no power over the weak, and all wealth was divided equally. Misson himself was set by the Keeper of Libertia (in fact, he stood at the head of state), Karachchioly became the state secretary, and the famous Pirate Thomas Tu – the Great Admiral, who commanded the Libertalian fleet. Money received from marine robberies went to the construction of a colony.

When preparing this blog, I read the « Piracy History », but nowhere I found even a simple mention of the word « libertal ». Maybe my inattention can be blameed for everything, maybe I came across some kind of cut edition (although I specifically compared several different publications found on the Internet). But I found any traces of Libertia. If you find this fragment, write in the comments, I will be interested to see.

The chapter dedicated to Everi mentions events that are really similar to the history of Libertaly in the interpretation of the scriptwriters Ancharted. Although they are much darker and more realistic. And since the ANSHARTED was mentioned by Everi and Tu, let’s talk about these glorious gentlemen.

Let’s start with Ever. As an assistant captain on the Duke ship, he conspired with the crew and mumbled the ship. The captain and sailors who did not want to join the conspirators were allowed to go down in the boat and independently look for the shore. With this, the pirate biography of Ever.

Having gathered a small flotilla, our corsar headed for the Arab coast. There he encountered one of the largest ships of the Great Mogol Gang-i-Savay, on which there were 400-500 sailors and 80 guns. The battle lasted two hours, but as a result, the flotilla escaped. On board the ship, the pirates found several higher court officials and Princess the Great Mogol, who sailed to make a pilgrimage to Mecca. Therefore, production was huge.

The universal story of piracy

However, historians doubt that it was the princess who sailed on the ship. Most likely, this is a legend. They indicate that the ship was thrown back into India, several noble women who made a pilgrimage to Mecca. And also – 5 million rupees in silver and gold – the revenue of the trading season on the shores of the Red Sea. Indian historians who describe this episode also do not indicate the names of the relatives of the padishah, who allegedly were on Ganges.

Be that as it may, the pirates for one raid made a fabulous state. Everi gathered the captains of the boats and invited them to hide all the treasures in Madagascar or in another, safe place.

Since he had the most powerful ship, the honor of taking all the prey fell « Duke ». The rest of the ships, Everi assured, weaker, they can sink or be captured. And then – goodbye, treasures. Pirates led to these arguments and gave all the loot.

Taking advantage of the darkness, the ship of Eve changed the course and disappeared, leaving former combat comrades with nothing. At the same time, most of the diamonds the captain concealed and from his own team.

However, do not think that Everi has lived the rest of his life in wealth and luxury. Getting rid of Duke (the frigate could arouse suspicion), the pirates acquired an discreet sloop, on which they sailed first to America, and then to Ireland. There, Everi found several merchants who agreed to sell diamonds without unnecessary questions, but the merchants threw our brave pirate, as he once threw his comrades. He scored on the order, circled the cape of good hope and headed for Bab-El-Mandebi Strait, leading to the Red Sea. There was captured by a rich ship that came from India to Arabia. From that prize, everyone got about 3 thousand pounds (according to other sources, he received 8 thousand. pounds, and the rest of the team members – 1200).

I learned from the captives that another rich, but well -armed ship, and suggested capturing it, would soon pass along this path. The team refused and removed the captain. As a result, he went to Rhinod, where he found peace with several associates, and the remaining crew members settled in Madagascar and founded a colony there.

At the same time, this settlement had nothing similar to the pirate democratic Republic. Vice versa. Pirates became local kings and kept in fear the local population. Each of the sea robbers had his own harem, where the most beautiful black women from among the natives were recruited. Local tribes who could not contrast anything with firearms were terrified by the pirates and tried to serve them.

It should be noted that these people who suddenly reached greatness enjoyed their power as tyrants, for they sank in their cruelty to complete atrocities, and there was nothing more ordinary for them than for the slightest fault to send one of their subjects to the gallows or shoot him in his heart. Whatever misconduct, insignificant or heavy, Karai has always been death;That is why the blacks secretly and together decided to get rid of these fighters, from everyone in one night.

As indicated in the excerpt above, the natives decided to arrange a rebellion, but the mistress of one of the pirates warned about the preparatory reprisal. All this is more like what libertal would be in real life if it were founded by thugs that enjoyed complete, unlimited power. As we see, there is a direct discrepancy with Antcharted not only in terms of describing the colony. But even in terms of history, which at all did not go to Madagascar and did not intersect with Ever.

Whether Libertia existed in fact?

It’s probably difficult to say. On the one hand, historians indicate that many facts from the « General History of Piracy » are confirmed by documents.

Plus the Pirate Republic itself could well exist. As you know, the pirates were a rather democratic people. They did not have racial prejudices (white and color sailors could well work together in one team), and the captain was chosen by general voting. If the captain did not like it, they could remove him in the same way.

In addition, during the heyday of the Corsarers, pirate bases appeared everywhere-this is the well-known Port Roal, and Porto-Rens, and the famous Tortuga. And in Nassau in 1706, the pirates founded their own republic, which was regulated by the Pirate Code, although formally it was the territory of the British Empire.

It all ended with the fact that Woods Rogers brought the royal pate to pirate in exchange for rejection of robbery and thereby restored control over the island. These events are described in another game – Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

And there was also a coastal brotherhood – a free coalition of pirates and kapers, which operated in the XVII and XVIII centuries in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexican. On the other hand, it cannot be ruled out that Defoe has embellished something, but invented something. He was clearly passionate about a pirate theme. I just note that I was pleased with the course of approaching both stories to reality. With Libertia it turned out brilliantly.

Yes, in almost any pirate adventure, cracked, ships ghosts and other megalodones are necessarily clogged. And it would be nice if it were all that remained stories inside the work. But no, certainly all this magic Shushara will be a real work in the world, which very often upsets me. So Antcharted 4 and on this side, an exception to the rules.

One of the many advantages of 4 ancharted over predecessors is a story. The first game in a series in which the myth is wrapped so that it is easy to believe in it. No matter how I love the series, but from the plot of the first three I will be boring. Well, everything is fine: archeology, adventures, lost cities, and then bam! And mutants, yeti, immortal come into business … Yes, there was also magic in Indiana Jones, but its percentage was much less. But the four in this regard is beautiful. And Libertalia, judging by the article could well exist. Not such a scope, possible with a different name, but myths are on something, but they are based. And the existence of Nassau once again confirms that the combination of kapers to create their own state is not such a crazy fantasy.
